Twiles novel, I should cancel all my plans because it's nearly impossible not to devour her captivating stories in one sitting. I couldn't put The Little Girl in the Window down. Romy, a precocious teen, allows a crush on handsome lifeguard Heath to cloud her judgement. Jealousy motivates her to pull a prank that has deadly repercussions and haunts her (and others) for decades to come. When Romy reconnects with Heath years later, her feelings are just strong yet she struggles with the desire to come clean about the night that changed their lives forever. As her guilt festers, a little girl begins appearing at night, watching her through her window. But is she real or a manifestation of the shame Romy has tried so hard to bury? - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Judith Dutton -- An amazing love story and thriller! : This book had me hooked with the first sentence: about a girl who, at the age of 14, fell in love, and killed two people. Both a love story and a thriller (my two favorite genres in one), this novel focuses on a shy, timid teen named Romy who, due to a crush she has on a lifeguard at the local country club, ends up stumbling into a nightmare that haunts her long after she flees her small town for the blessed anonymity of New York City. There, as a young adult, she re-encounters her lifeguard crush again, and this time, the attraction seems mutual. As the COVID pandemic descends on the city, these two decide to flee back to the relative safety of their quiet home town. Yet many new dangers await them there, including a mysterious “girl in the window” who, in the end, turns out to be far different than I imagined. This book is full of surprising twists that keep me guessing like that. I also appreciate that the females in this book, particularly Romy, does not fall into any of the usual “weak woman” stereotypes of being an alcoholic or mentally ill (like Girl on a Train or Woman in the Window).
